Periodic inspection and testing

Periodic testing and inspection of electrical installations is necessary for the prevention of damage from wear and tear, excessive loading, environmental influences and ageing. Installations must be maintained in a safe condition and periodical testing of your electrical circuits may be required by your insurance company, landlord or mortgage company. CTM inspectors are qualified electricians affiliated to a recognised competent person scheme.

Get 25% credit on periodic testing

Charges for conducting a periodic inspection and test depend upon the size of your property and the number of circuits that need testing. You could benefit from a credit of up to 25% of the cost of the test to use against improvements to your electrical installation. Work must be completed within three months of the test.

House rewire

Rewiring a property is a major undertaking and one that is best done when the house is empty. If you have purchased a new home and know that it needs to be rewired, it is best to plan to do this before you move in. Rewiring unlike other forms of home improvement has an impact on all floors and in all rooms. Typically power would be turned off on the first day with a temporary supply created next to the consumer unit. The task can then be divided into three stages:

First fix – which sees the removal of the old installation and the new cables being run under floors and through walls. This will mean lifting floor boards and using power tools to chase channels in the plaster on the walls

Plastering – at this point the electricians will leave and the plasterers will cover up the channels made by the electricians

Second fix – the electricians return to fix the accessories such as sockets and switches and to install the consumer unit

The property will then need to be decorated. It is best to lift and store floor coverings that are intended to be used after the work has been completed.

We can help by offering a rewire service that combines the main service provided by the electricians with that of joiners, plasterers and other tradesmen so that the inconvenience of the rewire project is kept to a minimum.

Have a look at our step-by-step pages

We have prepared a number of step-by-step accounts the jobs we get asked to do most often. We have done this for a couple of reasons. Firstly to provide our clients with an example of what the jobs involve and to show the care we take. Secondly to extent the information we provide to colleges of further education. These pages help to show students actual jobs and provide examples of what they might encounter when they leave college. Click on the links below to view the pages.

• Periodic inspection and testing
• Changing a consumer unit
• Fitting a new towel rail

Outdoor supplies

The installation of circuits that supply power to outdoor locations must be undertaken by a person who is a member of a ‘competent person’ scheme such as Elecsa, NICEIC or NAPIT. This kind of work is notifiable and should be reported to the local building control office. Country & Town works regularly with landscape design companies and would be pleased to help with your garden or outbuilding project.
